Vacuum-M Valve: Reducing Pressure Drop in Tanker Venting Systems
First published in 2021
Managing pressure conditions in tanker cargo tanks is critical for both operational safety and regulatory compliance. While much focus is often placed on handling overpressure, vacuum conditions in venting systems must also be carefully managed to protect the vessel, crew, and cargo.
To address this challenge, Pres-Vac Engineering developed the Vacuum-M valve, designed to minimise pressure drop in the venting system and improve overall performance in tanker installations.
The Vacuum-M design differs from conventional vacuum valves by combining reduced moving mass with magnetic control, ensuring that the valve opens at the required set pressure while avoiding the additional pressure drop typically seen in traditional weight-loaded vacuum valves. This is particularly beneficial in installations with long vent pipes, where pressure losses in the piping system can otherwise accumulate and impact system performance.
The upgraded Vacuum-M concept offers several operational advantages:
- Minimal pressure increases when the valve opens
- Closing pressure close to the opening set point
- Fewer moving parts for simplified maintenance
- Robust construction with internal components protected from the harsh marine environment
- Possibility to upgrade existing Pres-Vac vacuum valve installations
By reducing pressure drop across the valve, the Vacuum-M solution helps tanker operators maintain stable venting conditions while complying with industry requirements and supporting safe vessel operations.
